Despite much public outcry (including that of Gustave Eiffel’s great-great grandson) Paris’ Mayor Anne Hidalgo has decreed that the Olympic Rings placed on the Eiffel Tower for this year’s Olympics will remain on the landmark indefinitely. With the blessing and financial support of the International Olympic Committee, the existing 95-foot-wide, 45-foot-tall, 33-ton rings will be replaced with a lighter version. Located in Greater Manchester, the village resides in the Borough of Tameside, where the designer was raised and buried. Her loving family stars in the campaign, putting a looking glass against her extensive family tree. Westwood’s rebellious spirit lives on ...

Frances Barber
Congratulations to Frances Barber for winning Best Lead Performance in a Musical at the Off West End Theater Awards (the “Offies”) for her one woman show as Billie Trix “Musik” at the Leicester Square Theater. I was fortunate enough to see the debut performance at the Fringe Festival in Edenborough, Scotland 2019. A month later I was in London and saw the Leicester Square production. That night I was seated right behind Neil Tennant—one half of Pet Shop Boys—who wrote the music for the show. What a spectacular evening. Frances really brought the house...

A Very Prada Holiday
Prada, under the lens of Steven Meisel, has captured its Holiday 2020 campaign titled “A Stranger Calls.” In this, images come to life to tell the tale of an original Prada story written by Candice Carty-Williams, in which objects become as much as a protagonist as the characters themselves. This is achieved through the use of black-and-white stills that reference film noir, as macro shots and close-ups of products become the main focal point alongside images of models who further help tell the story. Freja Beha, Maty Fall, Mao Xiaoxing, Rudolfs Valbergs and Merlijne Schorren...

American heritage brand Coach pays tribute to the late 20th century artist Jean-Michel Basquait in its A/W 2020 collection. During his short life, Basquait was friends with the likes of Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Madonna and Debbie Harry—who performed at Coach’s showcase in his honor. Brushed with an autum color palette, the Coach x Basquait collaboration is full of Basquait’s raw imagery, which adorns everything from hoodies and tees to backpacks and handbags. Almodóvar’s first short film in 11 years, and his first of any length to be made in English, “The Human Voice” staring Tilda Swinton outwardly seems like more of a departure for Spain’s most celebrated living auteur than it really is. It’s not, in fact, his first stab at filming the oft-interpreted Jean Cocteau monodrama of the same name. After explicitly referencing the one-woman theater piece in his 1987 film “Law of Desire,” he made it the conceptual starting point of “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” the next year. He is one such person, and the subject of a new documentary. There are about 800 products and businesses that carry the Cardin brand, from men's and women's fashions and accessories to pens, cars and furniture, to hotels and restaurants. Canary in the Coal Mine
On Tuesday in London designer Vivienne Westwood suspended herself in a bird cage 10 feet in the air outside of a criminal court. Wearing a canary yellow suit, she was protesting Julian Assange’s potential extradition from Britain to the United States, where he’s been charged with conspiracy to hack government computers and espionage. “I am the canary in the coal mine,” she yelled through a megaphone to a crowd of cheering protesters. This of course, wasn’t her first creative political demonstration. In 2015, she drove a tank to David Cameron’s home to protest fracking. She...

INQUE
This week, publishing veterans Dan Crowe and Matt Willey announced their plans to launch INQUE (pronounced “ink”), a large-format magazine dedicated to commissioning and publishing diverse global writing next to extraordinary art, design and photography and they’re doing it in a slightly unorthodox way.For starters, INQUE will not be beholden to advertisers, because it won’t have any. Crowe and Willey, who previously launched Port and Avaunt together, wanted full creative control. They hope to raise funds for the first issue (about 0,000) with a Kickstarter campaign and be self-sustaining...

Christo
Christo, the Bulgarian-born conceptual artist who turned to epic-scale environmental works in the late 1960s, stringing a giant curtain across a mountain pass in Colorado, wrapping the Pont Neuf in Paris and the Reichstag in Berlin and zigzagging thousands of saffron-curtained gates throughout Central Park has passed on at 84. Christo—he used only his first name—was a creative visionary. His grand projects, often decades in the making and all of them temporary, required the cooperation of dozens (sometimes hundreds) of landowners, government officials, judges, environmental groups, local...

Additionally, Quaker Oats is pledging million over the next five years to “create meaningful, ongoing support and engagement in the Black community.” So I have to admit, my immediate first thought was “it’s cool that Land of Lakes and now Aunt Jemima are taking steps to end harmful representation, but if we remove ALL people of color from branding, how long until we’re...

Cassettes Make a Comeback
It seems that the vinyl revolution has ushered in another blast from the past; cassette tapes. At first it seemed like a bit of a nostalgic gimmick but now it really seems to be catching on. Most artists are now including this age-old format in their new release programs—some even labeled “Limited Edition.” The resurgence has caused me flashbacks to the days I would jam to my ABC and Dead or Alive cassettes on my Sony Walkman—at some point wearing them out and forced to replace them. “How to Be a Zillionaire” and “Youthquake” were both replaced no fewer than three times each. This is [NOT] How You Word
My best friend and copywriter extraordinaire Mike McGinty has just put a little essay / social commentary together on the laziest trend in advertising since “got milk” “got” out of hand and everyone jumped on that runaway train. Take it away Mike: There’s a disturbing trend in marketing today. Ever since Kinko’s declared itself “The new way to office” some years back, other brands have tried valiantly to turn nouns—in many cases, their own brand names—into verbs. How do you Sonic? This is how you Sonic. Great. I was headed to Burger King to Sonic and you just saved me the humiliation. How...

Blue Monday
“Blue Monday” in 1983 was the first single to establish New Order as a force, after the death of Ian Curtis had ended the band’s previous incarnation as Joy Division. To match their new synth sound, Peter Saville created this groundbreaking sleeve. With Joy Division, Saville had dashed album art rules, omitting the title from Unknown Pleasures and using classical imagery with Closer. For Blue Monday, he looked to machine-age aesthetics, anticipating computer-led design. The occult black sun imprinted at its centre, attended by the dash and dot, is still recognisable as the long-obsolete...
