“Fiorucci Walls”

The New York City Center is celebrating the return of in-person performances with its annual Fall for Dance Festival. Running on its 18th year, the ten-day event showcases five programs that highlight three different set of artists and companies who aim to make cultural performance just as affordable as going to the movies. 

Additionally, the City Center will unveil a seldom-seen panel artwork by Keith Haring and Angel Ortiz (LA II), entitled Fiorucci Walls. The site-specific installation was made on October 9, 1983 at Fiorucci‘s Milan outpost through a special commission by Elio Fiorucci himself. Initially, the legendary designer had the installation taken down in 1984, where he kept it in storage until it underwent restoration in 1991. The ultra-rare artwork is currently on loan from the MACo Museum in Thailand and will be located at the City Center’s Shuman Lounge. 

Haring first started working with LA II back in the early ’80s, commending his work “as close as the Western World has gotten to a stylized form of writing similar to Eastern calligraphy,” the artist wrote in a journal entry. “Fiorucci Walls” will be open for public viewing on four different dates—October 29 and 30, along with November 5 and 6 — from noon to 6pm EST.
