Elsa, Muiccia & The Met

The Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute has to pull out all the stops if it’s going to top Savage Beauty, the summer’s moving, emotionally charged Alexander McQueen tribute. It seems the Met is up to the challenge with the news that Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada will be the dual subjects of next year’s exhibit.

Totaling around 80 designs, the show will mix Schiaparelli’s surreal oeuvre from the late twenties to early fifties with Prada’s work from the late eighties to today. But there is a high-tech twist. With the help of Amazon, the two Italian designers will be juxtaposed in a kind of imagined conversation, with topics ranging from art to politics. Indeed, Schiaparelli offered a unique take on fashion, favoring wit over traditional glamour. Likewise, it’s hard to argue that any single designer today has approached fashion as readily and cleverly as Miuccia Prada.

Australian film director Baz Luhrmann will act as creative consultant, hopefully infusing the space with the same energy he brought to Moulin Rouge (and none of the energy he brought to Australia). Carey Mulligan, star of Luhrmann’s upcoming The Great Gatsby remake, will co-chair the May 7th gala, along with Miuccia Prada and of course, Anna Wintour.
